Crumlin board admits top-ups controversy has caused concern

It previously emerged that hospital CEO Lorcan Birthistle is paid a €30,000 top-up from the proceeds of its shop and on-site commercial activity.

A statement said: "The hospital has fully engaged with the HSE and has confirmed that the remuneration of the chief executive includes an allowance funded from on-site commercial activities." It reiterated that no charitable donations have been used to pay this allowance.

"The contracted remuneration of the chief executive has full board approval since his appointment and is fully compliant with PAYE and other statutory deductions."

The board said it previously attempted to secure approval of the health authorities for an appropriate remuneration level for the chief executive. It added that it believed that this could now be achieved.
