» Public consultation on national anthem closes today

The Senate is closing public submissions on the national anthem today.

Members of the public have until 4pm today to make their views on Amhrán na bhFiann known to the Senate Committee which is looking at how to protect the Irish National Anthem – which is now out of copywrite.

Fianna Fail Senator Mark Daly said he is determined to hear as many views as possible.

“This is not about changing the national anthem or looking for alternative national anthems. This is about Amhrán na bhFiann as it is now,” he said.

“Because the copyright expired in 2012 I suggested we should bring in new guidelines, protocols, and possibly legislation in relation to the national anthem. We’re looking for the publics view on what we should do in light of the fact the copy right has expired.”
