The shocking incident occurred over the weekend in Dublin's north-inner city and was filmed on a mobile phone.
Images capture a youth approaching the victim from behind, before lighting the firework and placing it in her hood.
The terrified woman then runs from the group and attempts to get rid of the banger, but it explodes inches from her head.
The woman who was subjected to the attack has now said she will be taking the matter further, and revealed the extent of the injuries she suffered.
"This is me in that video, 2nd degree burns, all my hair is falling out and still waiting for hearing to come back," the woman said on social media.
Last night, gardaí had not yet received a formal complaint about the incident but sources say local officers are aware of the incident.
"If a complaint is made then it will be treated as an assault and a criminal investigation would be launched," the source told the Irish Independent.
Local politician Christy Burke last night described the incident as "disgusting" and called for a specialist Garda unit to be set up in the north-inner city to combat anti-social behaviour.
